1907
The year Gustav OHAUS decided to forgo a promising career in the
gray iron foundry business for dreams of success in a business
venture with his father, Karl, a German born, trained scale
mechanic. Their earlier years were devoted to the scale repair
business in Newark, NJ.
1912
The OHAUS Harvard Trip® Balance is introduced. It quickly became a
standard by which other mechanical balances were judged and remains
so to this day.
1914
Incorporated as the Newark Scale Works.
1914
First patent issued and first production of equipment for grain
testing.
1928
Self-aligning agate bearing patented. Designed to reduce friction
and increase balance longevity.
1938
First die-case base introduced. Closer tolerances could be met by
providing better finish than sand castings.
1941
Additional factory opened to meet the demands for laboratory
equipment created by World War II.
1947
Incorporated as OHAUS Scale Corporation
1950
Occupied new factory in Union, NJ.
1954
Introduced Cent-O-Gram® overhead triple beam balance.
1957
First Dial-O-Gram® balance introduced, the OHAUS model 310.
1963
First to incorporate magnetic damping in low cost reloading
products, providing quicker results.
1966
Dial-O-Gram Model® 1650 introduced. Winner of Master Designs of
1966 Award from "Product Engineering Magazine".
1968
OHAUS introduces a new line of school balances. They're simplified
for use by younger students and less costly than a Harvard Trip®
Balance yet still afford the accuracy required for mass measurement
instruction.
1969
Gustav OHAUS Award program established to honor teachers for their
commitment to academics. Awarded to entrants for excellence in
science teaching.
1973
OHAUS sponsors first Supershoot, now an internationally known
target competition.
1975
Introduction of Metric Teaching Aids. Designed to simplify
instruction of linear, volumetric, mass and temperature concepts
for younger students.
1975
Established OHAUS offices in England and Germany.
1979
Introduced first line of precision electronic balances
incorporating easily read digital display and electronic weight
measuring mechanism for quicker results.
1982
Introduced the Port-O-Gram®. First laboratory quality portable
balance with 1:20,000 resolution.
1984
First electronic moisture determination balance introduced.
1984
Established office in Mexico to serve the Latin America.
1988
Name changed to OHAUS Corporation supporting our broadened position
in the balance market.
1988
Introduced the "E" series Electronic Toploading Balance, the first
of its kind - a no frills electronic balance - which stands as a
precursor to our standard models of today.
1993
Established office in Japan to serve the Far East.
1994
Received ISO 9002 registration for our facility in Cambridge,
England.
1994
Received ISO 9001 registration for our Corporate Headquarters in
Florham Park, NJ.
1995
Introduced Voyager® and Explorer® - the first modular
balances.
1998
Established offices in Korea and China.
1999
New OHAUS Europe office opens in Nanikon, Switzerland, serving as
the coordinating point for the sales and marketing efforts for all
of Europe.
1999
OHAUS celebrates the 30th anniversary of its support of the Gustav
OHAUS Award program, in conjunction with the National Science
Teachers Association (NSTA).
2001
OHAUS moves into a new global headquarters building in Pine Brook,
New Jersey
2002
OHAUS introduces Precious Gems line of balances, developed
specifically for the Jewelry market.
2003
New Pro series of balances launched globally. The Scout® Pro,
AdventurerTM Pro and Voyager® Pro balances incorporate cutting edge
design and software, simplicity in function and operation, and
exceptional value.
2007
OHAUS celebrates their 100th Anniversary!
From our beginning in 1907, as a small scale repair business, OHAUS
has become a global leader in the development of high-precision
electronic and mechanical balances and scales that meet virtually
any weighing need.
2009
The largest product introduction year ever for OHAUS significantly
expands their product portfolio. New products include: The MB25 and
MB23 Moisture Analyzers, BW Washdown Bench Scales, DefenderTM 7000
Advanced Bench Scales and 7000 Series Indicators, DefenderTM D500M
Mechanical Beam Scale, the RE and RA Series Price Computing Scales,
Trooper® TC-P Counting Scale Package, and the VN and VX Series of
Floor Scales and Platforms.
